My Platform.

The question was asked: “How would a conservative “fix” America?”

I volunteered my interpretation, and the response has been positive. Several people have said that they wished I was running for office, so they could vote for me.

If only I were old enough to run for congress. Oh well. If I were a month older, I could!

Anyway, this was how I determined conservatives would fix America, despite the fact that most of the ideas here are just as much libertarian as they are conservative, and that there are many flavors of so-called conservatives in today’s America. I don’t claim to speak for any party, or anyone but myself. That’s why I’m an independent.

Bailouts:

No company is too big to fail. Let ‘em die.

Healthcare:

Either cap damages or force losing plaintiffs to pay for all legal fees associated with the case to avoid frivolous lawsuits. Tort reform will lower healthcare costs. Democrats refuse to allow it because they are in the pocket of trial lawyers.

Taxes:

Lower them. Ideally, abolish the IRS and add a national sales tax. Rather than stealing people’s money for hard work, tax luxury items. Food should remain tax-exempt. Much fairer system.

Education:

Abolish the Department of Education. Leave it to the states.

Abortion:

Overturn Roe v. Wade and remove it as a national debate so that we can focus on other issues. It’ll become a statewide issue for them to worry about locally. Illegal in Alabama, perfectly fine in California.

Illegal Immigration:

Have a huge crackdown on employers of illegals. Throw them in jail on their second offense, and when they’re unable to find work, illegals will deport themselves.

Elections:

Abolish term limits for any federal office, and allow immigrants to run for President of the United States.

Religion/Race/Gender/Sexuality:

Abolish federal hate crimes laws, remove affirmative action.

Drugs:

Either make marijuana legal and tax it, or make tobacco illegal. The double-standard is ridiculous, and unnecessary. Stoners are harmless, and marijuana is far from a dangerous drug. I don’t smoke anything, but the way we treat people who do is offensive. Cigarette smokers are treated like criminals despite the high taxes they’re forced to pay.

Bill O’Racist Strikes Again?

9 07 2009

Last year, after visiting the famous Harlem restaurant “Sylvia’s“, Bill O’Reilly gave the place a rave review on his now-defunct radio show. Black leaders cried foul and called him a racist because he pointed out that the food was good and everyone were polite and well-behaved.

Many blacks claimed that what O’Reilly said insinuated that blacks are not usually civilized. The firestorm lasted for a few weeks, and finally, after O’Reilly met with Jesse Jackson (or was it Al Sharpton? I forget.), it all blew over. I, too have eaten at Sylvia’s, and I echo the sentiments of Mr. O’Reilly. There is nothing bad I can say about the restaurant.

In his attempt at complimenting Sylvia’s, he wound up the target of the victim brigades, who carry their race cards and throw them like shurikens at anyone within their reach. It’s as Chris Rock once famously said:

“Who’s more racist – black people or white people?

Black people. Why? ‘Cuz we hate niggas too.”

Bill wasn’t meaning to insult African-Americans. I doubt he has a racist bone in his (rather tall) body. He was telling his audience that it was a nice place to take their families, as opposed to say, a run-down, dirty slum hole.

When African-Americans talk about the divide in black society, they get a pass because it’s their story. When a white person such as Bill O’Reilly attempts to say something positive, by applauding the staff and patrons at Sylvia’s, he’s crucified for doing so.

Now, fast forward to the present and you have the death, and subsequent media coverage of Michael Jackson. Ever since last night’s “O’Reilly Factor” was picked apart by the liberal media, Bill O’Reilly has been targeted as a racist once again.  Criticizing O’Reilly is currently one of the most popular “trends” on Twitter right now. Why? All because O’Reilly said on his television program that Jackson should not be considered a black hero due to the things that he had done in his personal life. He married twice, and both times chose Caucasian women rather than African-Americans. He paid a white man and a white woman to have children for him, rather than choosing to father his own children, or adopting black children. He had several rhinoplasties on his African-looking nose because he had hated it his entire life, and eventually, his nose even fell off. Most noticably of all, he bleached his skin white and blamed it on a rare skin condition called vitiligo that effects about 1% of human beings.

My Caucasian sister was diagnosed with vitiligo when she was about five years old. She has white patches of skin across her entire body, but she puts on makeup and is able to conceal most of it. In the Summer, when she’s out in the sun, she tans very quickly and is often mistaken for a Mexican or Latina, and random people on the street attempt to speak Spanish to her. When she went to a specialist, she was given the option to have all pigmentation removed from her body like Michael Jackson did. It would leave her looking like an albino, and she would have to cover her skin whenever she went outside or else she would get serious burns. She chose not to do it, while Mr. Jackson instead decided to go through with the procedure, leaving only the skin underneath his fingernails and toenails as evidence of his African-American origins. She chose to continue to fight the disease rather than letting it defeat her, while he gave up and became, for all intents and purposes, a white man.

Michael Jackson was truly a great musician. There are about 10-15 songs that he’s written or performed that are among my all-time favorites. His personal life, whether you believe he was a pedophile or not, was chaotic and arguably disturbing… and his place as a hero to blacks, or to anyone should be non-existent.

Yes, he was the first black artist to make it on MTV. Yes, “Thriller” is the highest-selling album of all-time… but that was over 25 years ago… before the sex scandals, before adopting a chimpanzee, before marrying Elvis’ daughter, before his hair caught fire, before creating fake stories about himself for the tabloids, before calling the label head of Sony a racist, before his association with the Nation of Islam, etc. etc.

In 1983, he was just a young black man on top of the music world. In 2009, he was a tragic figure and an example of the risks and dangers one has when they become a celebrity.

Whether you believe he molested any children or you don’t, you should celebrate the music, and not the man. Al Sharpton said at Jackson’s memorial the other day that Jackson didn’t do anything wrong, and that it was all the media’s fault.

Bill O’Reilly didn’t say anything that wasn’t true. He has been careful not to call Jackson a pedophile or a rapist. He was only guilty of telling the truth about a black man while having white skin. If blacks are still willing to accept Michael Jackson, then why is there no tolerance for Bill O’Reilly?

So I’m sitting here with a massive headache…

28 06 2009

Listening to music was a bad idea, and I can’t sleep, so I figure I might as well do something constructive.

So I’ll try to explain my political views, and to why I refuse to join a party.

First and foremost of importance to me, I’m anti-death. The term “pro-life” is used to identify people who are opposed to abortions, but there are pro-life people who are in favor of war, capital punishment, and assisted suicide. I am opposed to all of these things. The death penalty is unnecessary. A life sentence in a Supermax prison is worse than a quick escape with a last meal and a needle. If the government kills people, how do they have any kind of moral superiority over the killers themselves? War is only acceptable when it’s out of necessity. In the case of abortion in particular, I want Roe v. Wade overturned, and for states to decide, rather than to ban it outright on the national level. States like California will allow just about any procedure imaginable, and Mississippi do the opposite.  The abortion debate has dominated politics for thirty years, and if you were to remove it from the national picture, the country as a whole would be better for it. It’s a very divisive issue that turns normally sensible people into rabid ideologues. I also do not support putting people who want to die and women who seek abortions in jail. They need therapy and our help. Prosecute the doctors who perform them, and make sure they are never able to practice again.

I’m opposed to gay marriage, but I’m in favor of civil unions. However, I’m also in favor of keeping the status quo where the states decide their own paths. Here in New Jersey, we allow civil unions, and we recognize out-of-state marriages as civil unions, but we do not recognize gay marriage. That, I believe, is a fair compromise that other states should look at.

I’m in favor of voluntary environmentalism, but not the green movement. Environmental laws are anti-freedom and un-American. As a Christian, I believe that Jesus Christ will return, that the Antichrist will rule the world, and that the Earth will only end when God himself chooses it. Humanity will not destroy the world, but we can ruin the ecosystem for certain animals, and that’s unfortunate. Smog is disgusting, and we should do what we can to pollute less. That said, greens take the issue way too far. I don’t drive. I take public transportation, walk, or carpool. I also recycle. That’s about all I do for the environment, though. I don’t know what my carbon footprint is, nor do I care.

I love animals, and I deplore animal cruelty. I have never in my life not had at least one pet. I would like to see less brutal methods of killing animals for meat, but I’m against groups like PETA, who kill more animals than any other organization. I am not a vegetarian, as I could never live without eating meat. Although I respect those who take a principled stand against eating meat, I have no respect for phony vegetarians who will still eat chicken or fish.

I believe in free markets and small government. The deficits are disgusting and we need radical overhaul to reverse them. Lower social spending is the key. Abolish the IRS, get rid of income taxes, and create a national sales tax. Social Security will never be solvent when I’m approaching my twilight years, but I’m going to have to pay for it for the rest of my life. That’s unfair. We need to phase it out sooner or later.

Religion is a good thing. Individual extremists who use religion as a weapon are bad. “God” on our money and in the pledge is fine. Prayer in school should be fine as well, provided it is voluntary and does not disrupt class. The War on Christmas is legitimate, but people on the right overreact. It’s largely not a matter of people hating Christianity, but a matter of capitalism and not wanting to offend the minority groups, even though 80% of Americans profess to be Christian, and many Jews and non-religious people still celebrate the holiday. America was founded on freedom of religion, not freedom from religion. Early Americans actually banned Christmas celebrations because they believed it was a pagan holiday. Thanksgiving was the big holiday back then, and was mainly a religious event.

I consider myself a feminist to some extent, but not the radical definition that has become accepted by the mainstream. I support full equality for women, and equal opportunity for girls. I still wouldn’t want to see women in the MLB or NFL, but it is an absolute disgrace that we have never had a woman President. Margaret Thatcher was the greatest Prime Minister the United Kingdom has ever had, and she was also the only female to hold the job. I tend to gravitate toward strong, opinionated women, even if it often leads to clashing. Good debate is always welcome, it’s just a matter of keeping things civilized.

I am opposed to any sort of racial, sexual, or religious quotas. I am also against hate crimes laws, because “reverse discrimination” is racism just the same. I don’t care if a murderer is motivated by chauvinism, anti-semitism, or homophobia. Murder is murder, and you should be harshly punished for it. While I am a Catholic, I think it is unfortunate that there will soon be six Roman Catholics on the Supreme Court, with two Jews and one Protestant. If one looks at the demographics of the United States, the Supreme Court does not reflect them very well… but I would not suggest a quota system to change that.

I am strongly against illegal immigration and would like a large wall erected to keep people from entering from Mexico, and the same with the Canadian border, but at a later date as it is less of a priority. As with abortions, I believe the best thing to do is to prosecute those who employ illegals rather than the illegals themselves. If they can’t get a job, they’ll deport themselves. Also, take a look at the specific cases. If they speak English, and if they have anchor babies, consider giving them a visa, but put them in the back of the line.

While I do not smoke tobacco or marijuana, I support the rights of people who do. Legalize pot and tax it. Stop marginalizing people who smoke tobacco. If the owner of a restaurant wants to allow smokers in his or her building, that is their business, and their business alone. Smoking and non-smoking sections worked just fine, thank you very much. I am against the legalization of hard drugs like cocaine and meth, though. Throw the dealers in jail for a long time, and clean up the users. If they become repeat offenders, fine the shit out of them so that they can’t afford the drugs.

I have voted for quite a few Democrats on the local level since registering in 2004, but I usually wind up voting for Republicans on the national level. I don’t think I could ever join the Democratic party as it exists today. If I were to run for office, I would probably have to register as a Republican, but I often see my political views as more in line with the Libertarians. If only their platform wasn’t in favor of abortion and gay marriage, I could see myself joining them. Ron Paul is the greatest statesman we’ve had since Reagan.

Why Obama is Right and the Right are Wrong.

22 06 2009

(Cross-posted to LiveJournal)

I’m not a fan of Barry O.

To clarify, I didn’t vote for him. Not only because I’m a big fan of John McCain, a great American patriot, war hero, and statesman – I still wouldn’t have voted for him if the Republicans had gone with Paul, or Giuliani, or Huckabee, or the Thompson Twins (either of them). If my state had open primaries, I would’ve even voted for Hillary as a protest vote against him. The only way I’d have ever put a check mark next to his box (in a totally hetero way) would be if the GOP had nominated Romney, or if Edwards ran as an independent and was polling above the Republican.

I disagree with nearly everything he stands for, and I don’t like him personally. He built himself up as a Messianic figure, fully equipped with a personality cult, and after a few months of scrutiny, it appears that the emperor has no clothes on. He’s a false prophet, and a mere mortal. He is flesh and blood like you and I, and he makes mistakes just the same.

However, his stance on Iran is not one of them.

In a country where the opposition shout Allahu Akbar! every night, it is clear that the people rioting in the streets aren’t doing it for us. Moreover, they’re not doing it because they’re opposed to Islam, or clerics in general. Mousavi is a cleric. Rafsanjani is a cleric. The only major figure in Iranian politics who does not come from a religious background is Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and they’re certainly not fond of him.

While the reformists in the opposition are certainly more pro-Western than the government, having the President of the United States throwing his support behind the opposition could push fence-sitters to the government’s side. While the college-educated women fighting for emancipation aren’t likely to shout Marg bar Amrika! any time soon, their aims will not be successful without more powerful figures joining their cause. And in order to be powerful in a dictatorship, you have to be a part of the establishment… an establishment that hates Israel more than anything, and by association the United States and the United Kingdom.

We were the ones who propped up the unpopular Shah as their monarch before the revolution. We had our chance to get involved. Our parents’ generation, in a moment of utter stupidity voted for Jimmy Carter and threw that useless fuckbucket into the White House. As a result, when the Shah was forced out of office, he never returned to power… and then when the Iranian revolutionaries held Americans hostage for over a year, we did nothing to stop them. It wasn’t until Ronald Reagan was elected that they backed off and let the Americans go.

Ronald Reagan was more forceful than Jimmy Carter, and certainly more forceful than Barack Obama is going to be. Force is what tyrants rule by, and force is what they understand. While it’s absolutely necessary for the Iranian people to know that the world stand in solidarity with them, the American government needs to remain as quiet and reserved as possible for the time being, because there is absolutely nothing they can do to weaken the Iranian regime short of an invasion. We can’t sever diplomatic ties. For starters, we haven’t had an embassy in Iran in decades. We are represented by the Swiss embassy. Secondly, President Obama ran on a campaign of promising to negotiate with the Iranian government. If he were to turn his back on that pledge, he would only do further damage to his reputation, as he’s already burned bridges with the Jewish and homosexual communities after going back on campaign promises.

So, the two men that I voted for President in 2004 and 2008, George W. Bush and John McCain have gone after President Obama and his reserved way of handling the situation,  and I find their remarks unfortunate. Congress voting on a measure to condemn the Iranian government isn’t going to help the men and women in the streets of Tehran. Iranians must do this for themselves. The only thing foreigners can do is what they are already doing: Helping combat the government’s attempts to block their internet access from Twitter, Facebook, and other sites that they are using for communication. As long as they are able to organize, I don’t see the government winning. These are people who are willing to die.

Even Mousavi, the establishment figure who led Iran as Prime Minister during the war against Saddam Hussein has said that he is willing to become a martyr. His fate, and the fate of his followers are in the hands of the Iranian Army and the Revolutionary Guard. So, while Mr. Mousavi may not have screamed Marg bar Amrika! as he stood atop a car last night, many of the people he is going to need to win over are still very anti-American and anti-Western. Once the Iranian revolt has an American flavor, all those who have died and will die will have done so in vain as the protests are condemned to fail.

We lost our bargaining chip in Iran in 1979. If we’re not able to accept that and watch from the sidelines, more people will lose their lives.

So at the risk of sounding like Alan Colmes, the left is right and the right is wrong.

…I think I need to take a shower now.

“Second Class Citizens”

21 05 2009

I was having an argument with a guy the other day and  he accused me of bigotry, homophobia, and believing that homosexuals were “inferior” second-class citizens.

All because I do not support their right to marry. Now, I believe civil unions are a good compromise that would ideally give them the insurance, hospital, inheritance, etc. rights that they seek.

My home state of New Jersey happens to be the one state in the country that has legalized civil unions that has neither approved nor banned gay marriage. If someone has a gay marriage in another state, we recognize it as a civil union (but not a marriage) here.

But that’s not what I’m looking to talk about today.

I don’t believe that gays are second class citizens. The American people, however, might…

Over thirty million people watch American Idol every week. Twice, people who were thought to have been homosexuals have made it to the finale, only to lose.

In the case of this year, the “homosexual” was the judges’ favorite, and overwhelmingly seen by people who watch the show (I do not.) as the better singer of the two finalists. Despite the fact that pictures of him making out with another man leaking out on the internet, he was widely expected to win. Every article I’ve seen about the results calls this a major upset.

A new record was set. Over 100,000,000 people voted. Ryan Seacrest refused to reveal how many votes separated the two, but given that this season’s ratings were lower than they have been in the past, it’s likely that a major factor was the fact that one of the two was a 23 year-old married Christian while the other was a 27 year-old irreligious homosexual who painted his nails black like some kind of emo Fall Out Boy fan.

Male celebrities are often told never to disclose that they are in a relationship because of concerns that it will upset and perhaps turn away their fanbase, which largely consists of teenage girls. So if they say hokey Kris Allen was less talented — and married — why would he win a popularity contest watched mostly by the younger, more tolerant generation?

I suppose maybe we’re not as tolerant as everyone says we are.

When I heard about the matchup a few days ago, I predicted this result. We’re involved in a culture war, whether you like it or not.

Even the people of California voted against gay marriage. Granted, that led to churches being vandalized by gay extremists. The same gay extremists who have attempted to slime the name of Carrie Prejean, whose beauty is second only to her bravery.

So I’m calling it now. The homosexual lobby are going to look at this result and claim homophobia was the reason Adam Lambert (known as “Glambert” by his fans) is not your American Idol.

And as a result, he will become one of their new gay icons, much like Clay Aiken was even before he came out of the closet… and that will probably only help Lambert’s album sales. Has anyone seen Ruben Studdard in the past five years? I think he might have become a competitive eater or something.

And here we all thought American Idol was all about music.

Top Six

19 05 2009

David Letterman sucks. His “Top Ten” lists aren’t even funny ninety-nine times out of ten. Here’s where I namedrop Conan, because he’s awesome, but he’s not known for a Top Ten list, therefore, irrelevant to the scenario.

So, since I like the number six and I have a few minutes to kill, I’ll try to list my top six of just about everything.

“Peace in the Middle East!”

11 05 2009

Was a popular way of saying goodbye to a friend when I was growing up in Brooklyn. I had a couple of Jewish friends, but by and large, we didn’t really know about the Israeli-Palestinian situation. To be honest, even if we had, I doubt any of us would’ve cared.

We’re privileged to live in a country where our neighbors can’t bother us. Not only are we protected by the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, but the Canadian economy also revolves around trade with the United States. Sure, we’ve gone to war with Mexico, but after getting your nose broken a few times, even the thought of a bloody nose turns you off. They don’t want war with us. Their strategy is to send their poorest citizens to America, have them work here, and send a large portion of the money they receive back home, thus helping to stimulate their local economy without Mexico having to worry about feeding and employing them.

The United States and Israel are like polar opposites in that regard. While we were able to be isolationist for a long period of time, Israel doesn’t even have the luxury of being able to stop and catch their breath.

Israel was created in the late 1940s, largely due to the Holocaust in Europe and feelings of guilt on the part of the British and American governments. If you happen to believe in an organized, monotheistic religion, all three Abrahamic faiths believe that it was granted to them by God after they were able to escape the chains of bondage as Egyptian slaves. Since their return to the Levant, the Jews have not only been surrounded by enemies on all sides, but within as well. Twenty percent of Israeli citizens are ethnic Arabs. Mind you, those are Israelis, not even Palestinians. Ninety percent of those Arabs are Muslims, while the remaining ten percent are Christians. Imagine if one-fifth of your neighbors were people that could wake up one morning and decide to blow up a school bus or a wedding ceremony. Granted, any nut here could wind up being another Timothy McVeigh, but the odds of that are significantly lower. That’s also not to say all Arab Israelis are radicals. Far from it, actually. I’m just attempting to shed some light as to the Israeli mindset. Not only do you lose your grandparents to Hitler or Stalin, but then you have to fight to keep the same from happening to your children.

There are over three hundred million Arab Muslims living in the Middle East, as opposed to six million Jews. To say the odds are stacked against them is hardly an understatement. From day one, Israel has had to fight with their neighbors in order to survive. In 1948, tiny Israel was attacked by Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, and Yemen, among others in the Arab-Israeli War. In 1967, Israel was again attacked by Egypt, Iraq, Syria, and Jordan in the Six-Day War.

In Munich at the 1972 Summer Olympics, the Israeli Olympic Team were murdered by Palestinian terrorists.

They have to live in fear for their lives every day. They have to draft every young adult citizen – both male and female – into their military in order to protect their families.

So when the so-called moderate King of Jordan gave an interview that was published today, he stated that if President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu are unable to come up with a deal that Arabs are willing to accept, it will show that the Obama Administration is “just another American government that is going to let [them] down”. He compared Israel to North Korea, and said that if they don’t make concessions soon, “We’re going to have a war.” So, rather than taking any of the blame for the issue, he says that if peace isn’t achieved in the near future, it’s going to be President Obama’s fault — America’s fault.

Now, I find it sadly ironic that the so-called progressive, pro-Western, free-thinking King Abdullah II of Jordan is calling for the Israeli government to offer even more land back to the Arabs when he himself has no business being in Jordan.

Abdullah is a Hashemite. That is to say, a member of the Hashemite Dynasty from what is now Saudi Arabia. In 1916, one of his Saudi Arabian ancestors led a revolt against the Turks whom had occupied most of the Arab World for several centuries, and as a result the Hashemite clan became kings of modern Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Syria, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia. In the decades that followed, his family managed to lose all of those kingdoms, with the exception of Jordan.

He has no right to lecture the Jews on returning lands to their supposedly rightful, pre-war owners until he himself stops collecting taxes from the indigenous people of Jordan. He wasn’t elected by the people. He is not native to Jordan. His namesake, Abdullah I, who came from Mecca, conquered Jordan in 1921.

I’d like to see a peaceful co-existence in the Middle East, just as I’d like to see a resolution to the Korean situation and, eventually, Irish reunification. That said, it’s wholly unrealistic to ask Israel to respect the wishes of “57 countries” that, as King Abdullah mentioned, refuse to recognize Israel, many of which fund terrorism and would like nothing more than to see the Israeli people forcably removed from their homes.

Sadly, it seems as though the pro-Western voices in today’s Muslim world don’t sound all that differently from the reactionaries in Iran.

In 2000, Israel offered 100% of the Gaza Strip and over 90% of the West Bank at the Camp David Summit with President Clinton and Yasser Arafat. Arafat refused the deal. It’s all-or-nothing for their side.

When Abdullah says they’ll attack Israel if they don’t make more concessions, it sounds eerily similar to when Ahmadinejad said that the occupiers of Jerusalem will vanish from the pages of time.

Now, I don’t claim to have the solution to the problem. I have no answers to contribute, only more questions. But at least if they were asking questions rather than making unrealistic demands of one-another, there could be more dialogue and more mutual understanding and less unnecessary bloodshed on both sides.

Reflections on 2008

1 05 2009

I remember being told when I was growing up that “You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.”

Now, if we had that phrase in New York City, I’m relatively confident that the rest of you have it in the heartland of Middle-America.

Nowadays, you have Republicans pissing and moaning about how we need more Sarah Palins, more Rush Limbaughs, and more Rick Santorums, as opposed to your John McCains. McCain, they claim, was a RINO [read: Republican In Name Only] and as such, the fake wishy-washy centrism of Sen. McCain is what doomed their brand in 2008, forcing America and, by association the rest of the world to suffer for four or even, God help us, eight years of teleprompter torture and South Side of Chicago socialism.

As is usually the case, the truth is much less convoluted. George W. Bush extended the War on Terror into Iraq. He poisoned the Republican brand with his ineffective manner of speaking and inability to sell his own point of view, effectively dooming his actions to low popularity among the populace, especially given the left-leaning nature of the mainstream press who were more than happy to crucify him in the court of public opinion.

Now, I voted for George W. Bush over John Ketchup, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. It’s the old lesser of two evils routine. That being said, you only have George W. Bush to blame for Barack Obama being President today. The same George W. Bush that launched an offensive, and arguably racist ad campaign against John McCain in 2000 turned out to be the one to torpedo the Republican Party in 2006 and 2008. Even in Florida, where Bush’s brother, the former governor remains highly popular, Obama managed to beat McCain on an outsider’s message of change. McCain wasn’t seen as the moderate who would be willing to cooperate for the good of America. The Democrats were effective in branding him McSame, insisting that his election would amount to a third term for Bush. In essence, what the talking heads on TV and the radio aren’t telling you, is that John McCain was seen by the voting public as too conservative. Whether that’s true or not isn’t the issue. What matters is that he certainly didn’t lose because he was an open-minded guy who was able to cooperate with Democrats in order to get things done.

John McCain, for whatever his faults, is the ultimate outsider. He’ll cross party lines whenever he believes it’s for the good of Arizonans and the American people as a whole… and, despite never having achieved a very high level of popularity in his home state, he has always steadfastly refused to add any pork projects for Arizona to Senate legislation. Whether you agree or disagree with the man on a particular issue or not, he has always been a man of honor, principle, and bravery.

While no politician is pure as snow, and they are all crooked to varying degrees, John McCain was simply the best choice the GOP had both in 2000 and 2008… and to have a patriot like him slandered for no apparent reason other than to make him the scapegoat for their own failures is ridiculous. Sarah Palin would not have won the 2008 election were the names on the ticket flipped. No Republican alive could have done any better than McCain did in the climate we’re in today. Not Romney, Not Rudy, and not the Huckster. Each and every one of them had their own flaws. Rudy being a philandering libertarian from a very liberal city, Romney for being knee-deep in big business, a flip-flopping fraud, and a Mormon to boot, and Huckabee being a likeable theocrat, but a theocrat nonetheless.

And yet, if you listen to talk radio or Fox News, you’ll hear people chiming in that the Republican party needs to move more to the right and marginalize people like John McCain and his daughter Meghan who dare speak out in calling for a more centrist approach, calling them pejoratives and throwing them under the bus when really, the situation we’re in now is all of our faults.

And if you think you’re going to win back Congress and the White House in 2012 by offering the people vinegar, get used to Barry’s change you can believe in.
